Chapter Thirty-nine

The men walked to an old picnic table behind the building, and Thomas tossed Billy one of the bottles of water in his hands.

“I know Sheriff has been trying to get you involved,”

he said. “I appreciate what you’re saying, and I agree with most all of it. But you really don’t know what you’re getting into here.”

“I’m willing to find out, as much as time and circumstances allow,” Billy said. “This isn’t about money, although I think Cassie would be pursued by any number of sponsors, especially if she were the UFA champion. She’s an attractive woman in a blood-and-guts sport, and that sells, in a strange sort of way. Your grandfather is actually the one who first pitched that idea to me.”

“Let me be honest with you, Billy. We need all the help we can get, but there’s a trust factor that Cassie and I have built over a lot of years. There haven’t been many people that we’ve let get close, outside of our messed-up family. What we’ve got between us goes a lot deeper than fighting. I don’t want to do anything that gets in the way of that.”

“I’m not looking to cause problems here. I like your grandfather and want to help if possible. If that doesn’t work for you and your sister, that’s fine. No hard feelings. I’ve got plenty of other things to be doing. In fact, I should probably be out doing them now.”

Thomas rubbed his face and stared into the woods, which were splashed with brilliant fall colors. There was more hesitation. Billy couldn’t be sure that his salesmanship would prevail, but he had a good track record.

“This has to be a family decision,” Thomas said, “and I know Sheriff is on board. Speaking for myself, I see the benefits of having an experienced agent guiding Cassie’s career, especially if she can go out to Las Vegas and win this fight. That would be a game changer. But she has to be sold on it, and so does our mother.”

“You think that’s a problem?”

“It’s hard to say. We’re talking about two stubborn women. They have their own ideas about most things. And I’d have to say that neither one is real fond of men telling them what to do.”

“What do you mean?”

“I don’t want to get real deep into it now, but a lot of our troubles go back to our father. He just about wrecked the family. I remember the fights with my mother, and I know Cassie does, too. That changed the way she feels about a lot of things, not just him. She doesn’t want to be controlled by anybody. It’s complicated.”

Now it was Billy’s turn to pause and think things over.

“You mentioned trust,” he said, “and that’s the way I’ve always handled my business. Lots of trust, not control. Most of my clients get to be like family. It just has to be that way if we’re going to build something that lasts.”

“Well, good luck breaking into this family.
